The Michael Gerard Puharic Memorial Fund, Inc (Michael's Feat) fulfills its missions with the help of dedicated physicians through four separate benefit programs:

To date we have distributed almost $150,000 in benefits to local families.

Neo-natal Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)/Special Care Nursery benefit program. A Michael's Feat Board of Director member, acting in the role of hospital liaison, responds directly to the needs of family caring for a seriously ill newborn and staff requests at the Unit.

Families needing assistance are asked to complete a request form. The Michael's Feat board then determines the appropriate financial, material or other support needs


Overnight Bags- Under the supervision of a Board of Director member, families with infants admitted to Monmouth County NICUs receive a free canvas "overnight" bag, stocked with toothbrushes, shampoo, socks, razors, prepaid calling card, disposable camera, a homemade baby blanket and other "creature comforts."

In line with the mission of Michael's Feat, the Overnight Bags program enables parents to spend more time with their ill children, and not worrying about or shopping for personal hygiene items. The program has expanded from Monmouth Medical to Jersey Shore, Riverview, Centra State, and St. Peters. Michael's Feat has distributed hundreds bags to local parents in need, and soon will bring expand this program to Ocean County.


Family Resource Room. The Family Resource Center Room is for parents with seriously ill infants in the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Monmouth Medical Center. The room provides a comfortable environment for parents and siblings to rest and regroup while visiting their ill newborn at the hospital. Features include:

  • A resource library including medical dictionaries, magazines.
  • A computer with e-mail access and tools to create care pages to keep friends and family connected.
  • A play area complete with wall toys, books and movies to occupy siblings.
  • Coffee and snacks.
This room was created to give families caring for a seriously ill newborns a "living room" away from home.

Advice and Awareness forum. In addition to providing financial support and material needs, Michael's Feat seeks to raise awareness and educate parents about serious illnesses that affect newborns, specifically trisomy 13 and 18. The Advice and Awareness forum provides parents in need with a host of informational and counseling services. It also contains a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section created by a certified Genetic Counselor to provide parents with balanced, easy-to-read information related to chromosome disorders.
